Expectations of Library Behavior

The Dana Library provides a safe and respectful environment for collaborative and individual research and study, serving a wide range of library users.  The Library’s collections, resources and facilities are available to all UVM students, faculty and staff, and members of the general public. In order to insure a welcoming, safe and productive environment the Dana Library has adopted the following expectations of library behavior for those using the Library space and resources:

  • Comply with all Library and UVM policies.
  • Respect the need for quiet in appropriate areas and respond in a positive manner to requests from library staff or other patrons.  The library has a Collaboration and Online Learning “noisy” area for reasonable conversation and a Quiet Study, be aware of where you are sitting.
  • Refrain from viewing sensitive images outside the realm of health science education and research, complying with UVM’s computer use policies.
  • Treat library material, equipment, furniture, and the building with care.
  • Keep all food and beverage away from contact with library materials and electronics.
  • Personal property is the responsibility of patrons and should never be left unattended.
  • Children must be supervised.
  • Service animals only permitted.
  • Patrons may not disrupt other library users due to poor hygiene.
  • Wear attire including tops, bottoms and footwear at all times.
  • Bicycles, including collapsible bicycles, must remain outside the building, secured to designated bicycle racks.
  • Present identification to Library faculty/staff upon request.
  • Leave the building promptly at closing.
  • Photograph, film, video record and/or audio record Library users or staff without permission*.

Under Vermont state law, library users have a right to privacy in their use of library resources (22 VSA 171-173).  Individuals may photograph, film, or video record the library building and/or collections and exhibits located in public areas.  If you would like to photograph, film, video record and/or audio record library users or staff with their consent in the Library, please contact the Dean's Office for permission at 802-656-2020.

*Public libraries are considered to be limited public forums and may regulate First Amendment activities such as photography, assemblies, and public speeches using viewpoint-neutral rules (Kreimer v. Board of Police of Morristown, NJ).

Patron behavior must conform to additional University of Vermont policies, such as Facilities and Ground Use and Code of Student Conduct, available at: https://www.uvm.edu/policies.

When a library patron has violated these expectations, the library reserves the right to ask the patron to leave or to call UVM Police Services.
